Tools for repairing phones

One of the most important secret to a successful repair is the use of complete and good equipments and tools. In this chapter, we shall briefly consider these equipments and tools that a device technician needs and how to use them. When correctly used, you will have a neat functioning device at the end of the work, but when wrongly used, these same tools can end up damaging your device even more – Tools for repairing phones.

Below is a PCB from which we will base our lesson on. Whenever we consider any applicable tool, we shall modify our image to indicate how that particular tool works. The components in this sample PCB is of little significance to us as we shall gradually mention them and their notations as seen in the image. Let us get started.

1. Soldering Iron.

The soldering iron is used to solder two points (conductors) together. It is just like welding two metals together but at a reduced heat. If you detect that there is a broken connection in your device circuit board, Soldering a tiny metal wire across the two points may be all that is needed. (In this series, I will refer to the electric circuit board of a device as the PCB. Both the electric circuit board and the PCB means the same thing.)

For a neat and easy soldering, allow the soldering iron to get sufficiently hot before soldering.

2. Soldering Led

A soldering LED tightly bound two points together. During soldering, the heat of the soldering iron melts the LED already placed with the two points to be soldered. When the soldering iron is removed, the heat is reduced and the led becomes solid again, bounding the two points together.

Led should be tactfully applied to hold two points together. The more you practice, the more you get used to this process.

3. Soldering Paste

This cream-like substance is applied to the surface of the points to be soldered. The benefit of using this paste is to make the soldered area neat and to prevent the LED from touching other nearby LEDs. Consider the two diagrams below.

If a component is to be removed by heating, soldering paste can also be applied to the surface before the heating begins. It is not advisable to apply too much paste at any time in a surface,

4. Jumper Wire.

In all the images above you will find a jumper wire on each one. Take a moment, scroll up and find out. The jumper wire is that important. Their function is simple. They create a connection between two broken links. If a wire from one point to another has a cut and lost connection, jumper wire can be soldered from the one point to the other in order to reestablish the connection. Let us now modify our sample image and see how the jumper wire work in reestablishing connections in circuit boards.

Notice that there is a disconnection between point A and point B. In the image above, If a jumper wire were not used to connect these two points A and B together, the device battery cannot be charged as the negative terminal of the point has lost connection. Jumper wires are coated with insulin on the outside. This is to done to prevent other parts of the wire from connecting with unintended components.

5. Heater

Generally, the heater is used to remove components from the circuit board. The heat from the heater is directed to the component to be removed. When the heat causes the soldered terminals of the component to melt, it falls off or removed.Heaters are also used to keep a web PCB dry to prevent bridging of components by the water.

6. Cleaner And Brush

Cleaner and brush are used to wipe dirt off the PCB. The cleaner may be Methylated Spirit or fuel. Well, I never used fuel, Methylated Spirit works for me. There are still other cleaners sold for about NGN1500 you can get from accessory stores. Whatever you choose to use, be sure to heat it PCB dry before you proceed.

Some devices may not turn on because of some metallic dirt in the PCB.

7. Meter

Meters are used to detect faults in electric circuit. The one is drawn for just our practice purpose and it is called a multi-meter. If a component of a device is not working the way it should, you can check it by using the two terminals in the multi-meter to touch the terminals of the faulty component. More on how to use the meter will be discussed in section two. You should understand that the meter is very important to your repair work if you are to succeed.

Screw Drivers

There is no way you can repair a device without using a screw driver. The screws must be unscrewed to open the device and access the PCB inside. There are many types of crew drivers and the most frequently used is the “star head” screw driver. Most Chinese phones uses the star screw and this is why you need its screw driver too. Before you start to unscrew any screw, be sure to check that you are using the right screw driver.
